5 Emerging technologies that may redefine our future

Updated: Dec 9, 2021

The last decade has seen an astonishing amount of technological innovation. From the emergence of artificial intelligence to the rise of 5G, technology has the potential to create a whole new world of possibilities. Technology has made its way into every aspect of our lives.

Here are 5 of these technologies:

1. Space Tourism

Space tourism is already a reality! We watched Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson launch into space in 2021. Due to the advancements in technology, several companies such as Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, and SpaceX are developing sub-orbital tourist flights that are aimed at attracting potential passengers. While space exploration is still in its infancy, the opportunities it presents to the world are already being assessed.

2. Gesture Controlled Computing

Unlike traditional input devices, gesture-based computing does not rely on traditional input methods. Instead, it uses the body's natural gestures to interact with digital resources. It is mostly focused on education technology and gaming, as it is designed to replace the cumbersome keyboard and mouse.

There are many devices in the market today in including the Leap Motion controller which is a motion-sensing device that enables users to perform various virtual activities in an intuitive manner. There are also devices with advanced features such as speech recognition and facial tracking.

3. Biometrics

Biometrics uses statistical analysis of people's unique behavioral and physical traits for identification and access control purposes. Security is being improved by the use of biometrics. An example of popular uses of biometrics includes fingerprint reading on phones or laptops, this is a type of biometrics that allows access control to the registered fingerprints for that system. Biometrics also includes many more identification possibilities; DNA matching, Iris recognition (eyes), Face recognition, voice recognition, and more.

4. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence parsed by machines. AI is the largest force in emerging technology, it includes sales applications, everyday ease of use applications, and security measures.

Artificial intelligence is here. It's been everywhere for a while, and it can do anything. It's in your work, your home, and your car. And it's in your phone, tablet, laptop—pretty much anywhere you goFor example, an AI we are all familiar with is with is Google Maps, we no longer need to look at paper maps and work out our travel route we can simply just type our destination into the Google Maps app and it will do all the work for us. Another example is face recognition which is a security measure AI, we can see this in use on most modern SMART phones where instead of using a password or passcode the phone will automatically unlock from just your face. Face recognition AIs are also used in surveillance and security.

4. 3D Printing

3D printers use computer-aided design (CAD) to print 3D objects from a polymer or other materials, they print from the bottom-up printing one layer at a time to build a physical object mirroring the virtual computer-created design. The possibilities for 3D printing are vast, we currently use 3D printing for the creation of product models and prototypes, as well as for mass customization. Companies are also working on using 3D printing to make cheaper alternatives for expensive parts or difficult-to-find parts. Currently, 3D printing is mostly used in the automotive, construction, and aviation industries but we are building towards possibilities in agriculture and healthcare.
